What is the Hardship Relief Fund?

This fund gives grants for basic costs and help with small debts to vulnerable Muslims in the UK who are unable to pay for basic living costs.

What can I get help with?

You can apply for help with:

1) Basic Costs – like food, travel, clothing and monthly bills etc.

2) Small Debts – for money owed on credit cards, bank loans, and gas and electricity bills

Can I apply?

To apply, you must be a Muslim living in the UK and be entitled to receive Zakat. To confirm that you can get help, we will look at how much money you have, your monthly income and expenses.

Grants are available to people who:

  1. Have claimed asylum in the last 3 months
  2. Been refused asylum in the last 3 months
  3. Have the right to live in and work in the UK (excluding full-time university students)

How much help can I get?

The amount of help you can get depends on your family size and any debts you have. The minimum we can give you is £400, and the maximum is £1,350. The help we give is a one-off grant.

For Basic Costs

Single person: £400

Couple: £650

For each child (under 18): £50

For Small Debts

You can get up to £400 towards any small debts you may have.

We may also signpost or refer you to other organisations that may be able to help you based on your situation.

How long will it take to get help?

The application form takes around 20 minutes to complete.

Once you have you sent us your application with all the information and documents we need, we will aim to give you a decision on your application within 5 working days.

If you do not give us all of the information and documents we need to look your application, your application will be delayed and you will have up to 10 days to give us anything you have missed.

What happens once I have applied?

Once you have sent us your application, the Hardship team will make sure that you have given us all the information and documents we need to look at your application and that you are eligible to apply for help. If there is anything you have missed, you will be asked to send it to us within 10 days.

We will then look at how much money you have, your monthly income and expenses, as well as any debts you may have to confirm that we can help you.

If we can give you a grant, we will email you to confirm this and arrange payment for you. If we cannot give you a grant, we will email you to tell you why.

How many times can I apply?

We can give you and your family one grant from the Hardship Relief Fund every 2 years.

If we have given you a grant for things like food, clothing and travel in the last 2 years, you won’t be able to apply again until 2 years have passed since your last payment.

What information and documents do I need to give?

To apply for help with Basic Costs, you will need to give us the following documents:

Photo ID for you, your wife/husband and children under 18 – You can give us a copy of a passport, driving licence or other document given to you by the authorities.

Bank statements – We will need 3 full months of bank statements for all your bank accounts. For example, if you send us your application on 2nd January, you will need to give us bank statements for October, November and December.

If you are also applying for help with small debts, you will need to give us:

Debt documents – We will need statements for any money you owe on credit cards or bank loans. We will need bills for money you owe for gas and electricity.

Depending on your situation, you will also need to give us one of the following documents:

Claimed asylum in the last 3 months (for fresh asylum claims only)

1) Letter from Home Office or Immigration Tribunal dated in the last 3 months

2) ARC Card

Refused asylum in the last 3 months

1) Letter from Home Office or Immigration Tribunal dated in the last 3 months

Have the right to live in and work in the UK (excluding full-time university students)

  1. For UK Citizens
    1. British Passport
  2. For Refugees/LTR/Spouse Visa/LTE
    1. BRP Card/Home Office Letter/Endorsement stamp in Passport
  3. For EU citizens/EEA nationals
    1. EU Passport/BRP Card/EU Residency Document

How will the help be given?

If you have a bank account, we will put the money into your account.

If you do not have a bank account, we will send you a voucher for you to use in shops. We may send the voucher to your email address. If you do not have an email address, you can get a free one here

Where else can I get help?

Ensure you are receiving all the benefits that you are entitled to

If you are a UK resident or have recourse to public funds you can use the Entitled To assessment tool to check that you are receiving the right amount of money in benefit claims, whether as well as checking your eligibility for other types of benefits.

Help if you are homeless or living on the streets

If you are homeless, living on the streets or have just left prison, it’s important you seek help to find a place to stay. Shelter can help you find out about hostels, night shelters and other emergency housing options if you’re homeless and on the streets.

Help if you are dealing with an addiction such as gambling

Gambling can harm your health and relationships and leave you in serious debt. If you have a problem with gambling and you’d like to stop, support and treatment is available.

Help with debts

If you have large debts, it is important that you seek advice. Large debts will not go away. Our partner StepChange is on hand to offer you face-to-face and online support to help you structure a plan that works for you.

Alternative small grants

Whilst the National Zakat Foundation assists Muslims through Zakat, there are several other organisations that you may be able to get additional support from. We always advise that you explore all your opportunities. Use the Turn2Us grants search tool to find other grants that you may be eligible for.

What if I am not happy with your service?

Although we may not be able to help everyone who applies to us, we are committed to providing a high-quality service to all our applicants. If something goes wrong, we need you to tell us about it. We will use the information you give us to help improve our service.

What will happen next?

We will reply to your email to confirm that we have received it within 5 working days.

We will look into your complaint. A Senior Grants Officer will review any evidence available and speak to members of staff if appropriate.

We will aim to reply to your complaint within 15 working days. If this is not possible, we will send you an update.

If you are not happy with our response to your complaint, you can ask for this to be reviewed by the CEO of National Zakat Foundation. The CEO will then review your complaint and respond to you directly.
